Back to My Roots

Katelin Reeser April 4, 2018

I've decided it's time to go back to my roots, my love, photography. I began studying photography in high school, fine art photography in college and straight out of college began working on jewelry design.... wait, what?

I know you're probably wondering what happened. I have a great passion for capturing memories, experiences and feelings and really really wanted to preserve that passion. During college I got a taste of the fine art world by participating in and attending art shows. The lifestyle really wasn't for me, I hated the idea of rubbing shoulders with the high and mighty just to get some recognition. I had seen many artists lose their passion for photography by working corporate jobs or simply being overworked. I didn't want to lose the love I had by becoming burnt out.

I took a break from photography to work more with my hands. I began designing jewelry as a hobby with the intent of perhaps someday starting a business. After 7 years, I'm currently running Rock Salt Vintage as well as freelance product photography styling. Freelance work has given me the freedom to travel occasionally and to ultimately discover that I am in love with hiking, camping and the great outdoors. It's where I can truly find peace and capture beautiful scenes of my explorations.

Over the past 4 years I've had the opportunity to travel to some amazing places. As you can imagine, I have loads of images documenting my travels- so I'm finally sharing these images via Instagram and this blog.

Looking back at these trips truly inspires me to get out and keep traveling to new places, see new sights and be present in this world. In my experience, my absolute favorite memories have always been after the most challenging hike- mile after mile straight up the side of a mountain, or over and around fallen trees and boulders on an unkempt path, or biting flies, or wind so powerful it could almost blow you over. The ironic thing is that the beauty and stillness of the view at the end of these hikes doesn't reflect the experience, but it's the challenge that makes them that much more memorable.

The thoughts of travel have been overwhelming lately.  I feel a constant pull to be out in the world exploring, photographing and experiencing new things. I believe you can make your dreams come true as long as you are willing to make a change. There really is no one holding you back but you.

My hope is by sharing my images and experiences I can inspire others to follow their dreams. Whether it be traveling across the country, changing careers or simply exploring your own back yard.

The only question now is, where to next? I have a few exciting trips planned this year, follow along on Instagram below to see where I've been and where I'm off to next...

On the mend and headed out again soon. For all your words of encouragement- thank you. The tough thing about taking time off during a thru hike is parting from friends we’ve met along the way, knowing that fires are right on our heels and snow

Mornings and evenings are my favorite time to hike. The light is beautiful and the temperatures are cool. And sometimes you race down the mountain so you can capture moments like this ๐ŸŒ„
I’ve experienced the greatest generosity from humankind in my entire life in just the past few months. From a stranger welcoming us into her home to take a much needed nap to a couple cooking us burgers at a road crossing on the 4th of July (an
Watching the sun rise with the mosquitoes. A faint breeze whooshes them away every few moments. I thank the wind while only days before I cursed it for being too strong. The sun warms my face as I watch it float above the horizon, casting a warm glow

Do like I say and not like I do ๐Ÿ™Š Are we doing this right? Snow and rock hopping are the highlights of the Sierra for me.
Look Ma, I made it! One of the most magical and challenging things I’ve ever done was climb to the top of Mt. Whitney/Tumanguya, the highest point in the lower 48 states at 14,505 feet. We began hiking in the middle of the night, the moon illum
